26/02/93: Nitro Puppy / Ish / I'm Being Good - the Richmond, Brighton.

So this would've been our first gig. Probably about the 3rd or 4th time i'd ever played a gig in my life. Dave played bass and we had a drum machine, which, at the time, we thought sounded pretty cool. In retrospect we probably sounded like Godflesh or something. yowch.

12/05/93: Trumans Water / Pram / I'm Being Good - The Madeira Hotel, Brighton.

And then a couple of months later down the line our second show, which was supporting Trumans Water. I can't remember much about it. Simon Joined on Bass and Dave played 2nd guitar.

29/06/93: PLANKTON LABEL NIGHT: Scaredy Cat, I'm Being Good, Comet Gain, Santa Pod, The Square Root Of Brain, Sement, etc - Monarch, Camden.

Simon had been in Italy for about a month so we drafted in Jase to play the bass. The only way he could make it to the show was in Square Root Of Brain's van. So, Square Root Of Brain turned up in their van with all their keyboards and synthsizers and stuff and took the slot just before ours on the bill, but then proceeded to spend about 45 minutes plugging all their stuff in and by the time they'd played their set and gotten off stage we had enough time for no soundcheck and 2 songs. We managed to make those 2 songs suck as much as possible though. we couldn't hear a damn thing, i think i was playing through a 10 watt practice amp and dave was playing through the pA and Jase was playing through a huge bass amp and no-one could hear the drum machine. i remember looking over at dave and he'd GONE, he'd edged off the stage and was playing his guitar from a dark corner near the toilets.

26/08/93: Voodoo Queens, Comet Gain, I'm Being Good - Concorde, Brighton.

For some reason we kept ending up on the same bill as Comet Gain. This was the first such occasion. Simon got off the plane from Italy that day and saw a poster for the show so he came along and played drums. We still had the drum machine running but he clattered around over the top and it sounded wild (at the time).
The only other thing i can remember is Prick Decay came to see us and spent the entire duration of Comet Gain's set right in front of the stage screaming abuse at them.

01/10/93: SINGLE LAUNCH NIGHT: I'm Being Good, Ballast - Racehill, Brighton.

During the day Ralph gave me a lift up to london and we picked up the singles from the pressing plant and then we drove back to brighton and put them in some sleeves and went to the gig. Somewhere along the line Ralph managed to get a wasp fly up his trousers and sting him on the ass.

05/10/93: Oil Seed Rape, I'm Being Good - Fisherman's, Brighton.

I seem to remember this being a good gig for us. We still had the drum machine and clattering drums at the same time thing going on. Oil Seed Rape were another drum machine band. I rember watching them and thinking it was time to ditch the drum machine.

05/11/93: I'm Being Good, Square Root Of Brain - SOAS, London.

Simon was really ill so we did this one as a 3-piece. I hired us a van over the phone and then Ralph and me spent all afternoon walking around trying to find the place we'd hired it from. We got to the gig about 7.30, which was a little late. Square Root Of Brain were freinds of Jase's and had booked the gig. We were under the impression that they were headining and they had a huge following in London who were all going to be there, we also maybe underestimated the size of the venue. Another thing i should point out is that week we'd had our single played on John Peel a couple of times, so spirits were high. When we got the venue the first thing we saw as we walked in the door was a poster saying 'INDUSTRIAL NIGHT! I'm Being Good with support from The Square Root Of Brain', which got us kind of worried because we didn't think we could really get away with headlining ANYWHERE at that point, which, it turns out , was a pretty accurate assumption. Anyway, so we walk into the venue and it's BIG, like, Nirvana had played there recently, that's how big it was. And then the next thing we notice is that Square Root Of Brain have already set up and just finished soundchecking and the entire stage is strewn with keyboards, cables, more cables, and yet more cables, and the sound man tells us we're too late to soundcheck and that the Brain's equipment took so long to set up and get working that there's no way any of it can be moved, so we'll just have to go on after them and start playing. We're pretty disoriented by all this, but then something happens: 3 HOURS. 3 Hours happen without interruption and then finally, at around 10:30pm Square Root Of Brain take the stage, and play a mammoth set in front of their flatmates in this huge empty room. One other thing; they play for AN HOUR AND A HALF.
we were young at the time, so we stuck with it until it was time for us to play at about midnight, to about 3 people, who, all credit to them, did manage to roll in broken glass at the front of the stage throughout our set. So there was, like 3 or 4 people rolling in glass, some guy in a leather jacket holding a beer maybe about 20 feet back from the stage to the right,, and a couple of Japanese girls dancing somehwere in the middle of the room. It was kinda fun, and we had this huge stage to run around on, so we didn't mind too much. I don't think the venue were too impressed, i guess they were expecting a couple of thousand people or something, which was kinda embarrasing.

06/11/93: CHOCOLATE MONK FESTIVAL: Prick Decay, Yummy Fur, Small Things, Side Mounted Scum Suckers, I'm Being Good, and a bunch of other bands - Racehill, Brighton.

This was a really really great day. All the bands were great. This was the first time we played without the drum machine and it sounded like a proper band.
Afterwards we carried our gear across town and did a Small Things set at the malborough hotel.

08/12/93: Skinned Teen, I'm Being Good, Avacado Baby - St. John's Tavern, Archway, London.

Simon was ill again so we hiked the drum machine up on the train with our guitars. When we got there we discovered Skinned Teen had pulled out. So we ended up headlining again in front of about 6 people, most of whom turned out to be members of Huggy Bear. They seemed to like it, too. I don't remember us being particularly great or anything..

10/02/94: Tribute To Nothing, I'm Being Good - St. John's Tavern, Archway, London.

Tribute to Nothing were some hotly tipped Indie band comprised of enthusiastic teenagers. I guess the modern equivalet would be 'Busted'. Their dad was their manager. TTN were kinda melodic hardcore, they weren't great. Their guest list consisted of about 70 or 80 industry people and journalists, although i don't remember there being anyone in the room for either band. I remember wondering what managers were for..

For some reason we got really drunk and played really badly, although i remeber really enjoying it. We had the drum machine going as well as Simon playing the drums again, but we didn't get any of it in the monitors, so were all totally out of time with the machine. I heard a tape back after and it sounded great, a completely aryhthmic mess. Objectively though, i guess you could probably say we sucked.

I think we'd finally ditched the drum machine, i don't recall exactly where we used it this show or not. We played okay. The other 2 bands were crap. Archers Of Loaf accused us of drinking all their beer, which, sadly, was not true.
